Software Developer Intern

University of Ottawa, Faculty of Health Sciences

One of two developers on the faculty’s clinical placement platform (Laravel), where students upload placement documents and nurse advisors approve them.

Overview

Four-month, full-time internship through the University of Ottawa’s co-op program, with nearly 300 commits to the platform (Laravel, Livewire, Filament, Docker dev environment).

Built role-based admin permissions, a deadline and reminder calendar with batch edits, and requirement cloning for program coordinators.

Built document upload and review: a PDF.js viewer, multi-file uploads merged into one PDF, superseded submissions kept as history, and temporary upload files deleted once handled.

Added automated reminders for expiring documents, realtime unread-message alerts, a responsive layout installable as a PWA, and the platform’s first unit tests for CI.

Locked down production: restricted who can view each submission, tightened PDF access and removed the registration routes from the live site.

Built an AI support-assistant prototype outside work hours and pitched it internally, which led to the AI Platform Developer role.

On the IT side, set up the technology in the simulation rooms, connected lab networking at the Lees campus and supported the faculty’s systems.
